26 Weeks + Buttermilk Buns

Our 26-week old baby woke up a little after 8 today, and was restless for most of the morning. Once again, he was even fussing while nursing. But his teeth look exactly the same, so I'm starting to rethink my theory that he's teething. We'll see.

Arthur completely panicked when I ran the stick blender while he was in the high chair. He's always disliked the regular blender, but the stick one is quite a bit quieter, so I thought it might be ok. But he got really worked up and started screaming, so I waited until I was holding him to run it again. He was alright with it when he was in my arms and had a better view of what exactly was causing the noise. Poor guy, I think he's going to be a very sensitive kid.

For snack time, we started with the same bean purée I gave him yesterday. He was in a more receptive mood today, and after making a few faces, seemed to enjoy it quite a bit. Or at least, he kept wanting more. We followed it up with some leftover scrambled egg, which he loved. He did seem to get full quicker than usual though, and I wonder if he's got some digestive distress going on.

For dinner, I opted to give him the purée I had been making earlier in the day, which scared him so badly. It consisted of leftover cauliflower from last night's dinner, homemade whole-milk kefir, green onions, and onion powder, blended into a smooth purée. It didn't sound particularly appetizing to me, but Arthur didn't seem to mind it at all, and did a good job eating it. I have to say, though, his breath after that meal was the worst it's ever been. and I suspect that after the beans, cauliflower, eggs, and allium, he might be a bit gassy tonight as well. I certainly don't envy Miklós having to share a bedroom with him.

Arthur's Friday solids were thus comprised of:

  • cannellini beans

  • lupin beans

  • Parmesan

  • garlic

  • oat milk

  • egg

  • turmeric powder

  • onion powder

  • ghee

  • cauliflower

  • whole-milk kefir

  • green onions (new food!)

  • onion powder

Friday night is either takeout or ready-made meals from the grocery store, and this Friday was no exception. But I did make one of my new favorite snacks. Maybe it's weird, but I've been obsessed with buttermilk powder lately - that milky tang is just so good. So when I saw this super simple recipe on Lilsipper, I figured the goat milk powder could easily be swapped with buttermilk. And oh my goodness, I'm obsessed. Not sure if the result would appeal to others, but I love these, and they have a decent amount of protein, which never hurts a breastfeeding mom. Here's how I make them:

Buttermilk Buns (makes 2 small buns)

Ingredients

  • 1 egg

  • ½ cup buttermilk powder

  • 1 tsp baking powder

Instructions

  1. Whisk the egg in a small bowl or mug.

  2. Add the buttermilk powder and baking powder.

  3. Form into two balls (the texture will be a bit sticky!)

  4. Bake in the oven or air fryer (on parchment paper) at 175 degrees Celsius for 10-14 minutes, or until the top begins to brown. I often flip them over halfway through.
