Tantes + Oatmeal "Milk"

Saturday

Arthur woke up screaming at 6:00 on Saturday, fell back asleep a couple of minutes later, and then woke up again at 7:30. His three breakfasts consisted of susu, half an avocado and some cantalope, and then, after a bath, more susu, and a nice nap, which I think he needed.

Arthur was in for a treat when it was lunch time: he got some scrambled egg! I scrambled it in olive oil with some soy milk, garlic powder, turmeric, a couple of mashed white beans, and, luckiest of boys, Parmesan! Arthur was more than happy to devour the entire thing.

Afterwards, we took him on a short walk on the fire trail, during which he got a good nap in, and was in high spirits to greet the new arrivals at 3: his tantes and Z-Dawg! Everyone was very excited to see the little tyke, and I have to say, his stranger anxiety was much better this time. Arthur pretty readily assented to being held by everyone new, which was a relief - I think his earlier fears had more to do with the stress of traveling and a new location and everything, rather than the new people themselves.

A bit after 4, Uncle Sanyi and Sebi arrived to greet everyone, and the younger generation, Sebi excepted, went for another walk on the fire trail. While we were gone, the older folks gave Arthur some more beans (both white and scarlet runner) mixed with soy milk and tahini.

Arthur’s dinner consisted of what everyone else was eating - more beans, rutabaga, potato, and a bit of chicken apple sausage in a cashew cream-based soup. The sausage was a new food, but he seemed to like it quite a bit! He fell asleep during his susu afterwards, though - I guess he wasn’t terribly interested in hearing G-Dawg arguing with Uncle Sanyi about alien conspiracy theories. Then it was off to bed for the little dude (and his parents)!

So, Arthur’s Saturday feasting amounted to:

  • avocado

  • Parmesan

  • egg

  • soy milk

  • olive oil

  • white beans

  • scarlet runner beans

  • tahini

  • pink beans

  • chicken sausage (new food!)

  • potato

  • cashew cream

  • rutabaga

  • spices: garlic powder, turmeric

Sunday

Arthur slept in until nearly 8:00 on Sunday! He had a big breakfast on the boob, followed by his usual half an avocado. Then it was another susu breakfast, during which Arthur got about a 20 minute nap in before we woke him up and whisked him off to American camp, for a hike in the sun.

We did put Arthur’s sunglasses on him, but they lasted as long as they usually do - about 10 seconds - before Arthur pulled them off and held them by the earpiece instead. We tried to keep an eye on him as he held them, but at some point he dropped them somewhere along the trail. We all backtracked along the way we had come, looking all over the trail and the tall grass by the sides of it, but couldn’t find the sunglasses anywhere. Of course, it didn’t help that they were green. So it was goodbye to the glasses. Ah well, I guess he never wore them anyways.

Back at home, Arthur got some more susu, but no nap this time. Still, he was apparently great with Oma, who babysat him while his mama and tantes went to town for a while, and fed him some kabocha squash-soy milk purée. I got home around 3:30 or so, and gave Arthur some susu, and, more importantly, a nap on me.

It wasn’t a long nap, but Arthur did get in 30-40 minutes on me. G-Dawg, Miklós, and I took him on the fire trail afterwards in the hopes that he would increase that napping time, but he was pretty awake during our walk, and in quite a good mood. He devoured a number of salmonberries as we all foraged among the bushes for them; he seems to be liking them more and more, and it was fun to all hunt berries together, a la Blueberries for Sal. Needless to say, he didn’t have a huge appetite for susu when we got home.

He did have a pretty good appetite for dinner, though, which was again allergen delight: Malt-o-meal made with half and half and mixed with tahini, peanut butter, and mixed nut butter. I also gave him a bit of zucchini from my chili dinner. Arthur didn’t drink a lot of susu after that, so it was bedtime for bonzo, who had a bit of a hard time going down. I think he was overly tired by that point, but he did fall asleep after a few minutes, so that was a relief.

The Sunday solids, thus, came to:

  • avocado

  • kabocha squash

  • soy milk

  • salmonberries

  • Malt-o-meal (wheat, barley)

  • half and half

  • peanut butter

  • tahini

  • mixed nut butter (cashews, almonds, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds, flax seeds)

  • zucchini

Monday

Arthur slept in on Monday, until after 8:00! The well-rested little munchkin was thus in a good mood for his susu breakfast and a bit more than half an avocado afterwards. After another nursing session, during which Arthur had some fun (while I did not) biting my nipples with his new teeth, Miklós took Arthur off on a walk, during which he got a 45-50 minute morning nap in while everyone else except Oma went to False Bay.

Oma and Miklós fed Arthur some mashed leftovers (not sure what they were, exactly, except that they contained beans) for his solid lunch, and then some puffs in the afternoon, as they touted him around Lime Kiln. He was getting pretty fussy by the time they got back - I think he was both tired and hungry. So much so that he was a nightmare to nurse - raging, squealing, and biting. It really was a delight.

We took him for another walk in the late afternoon, hoping he’d nap then, but he only slept for 20 minutes or so before a low-lying branch woke him up. Still, he seemed quite a bit more cheerful afterwards, so maybe it was enough.

For his dinner, Arthur tried two new foods: watermelon and taro! He ate the small pieces of watermelon readily enough, but was much more enthusiastic about the taro, which he devoured rapidly and kept grunting for more. We didn’t have enough taro for him to eat himself sick, but I did also give him some pieces of my chicken breast and tofu, which he seemed pretty happy to eat.

After dinner, Arthur managed to draw blood from his dad’s finger as he was being given his vitamin droplets. He’s really been into testing out his new teeth today; he was practicing quite a bit on my nipples as well. Oma said she would yip like a dog when we’d do that as babies, and so I tried that with Arthur. His reaction? Very wide eyes, and he did stop. So I guess that’s something.

Anyways, on Monday, Arthur ate:

  • leftover bean mash

  • puffs (corn flour, sunflower oil, dried carrot powder)

  • watermelon (new food!)

  • mashed taro (new food!)

  • baked chicken breast

  • baked tofu

I can't say I've cooked any meals the past few days, but here's another little recipe of sorts from Chocolate Covered Katie. It's for an oat milk that really tastes like oatmeal, if that's your kind of thing, which for me, it is. Now, it doesn't do well getting mixed with coffee, or at least not hot coffee - it gets all weird and separated. But it's good with cereal or on its own - it really is like liquid oatmeal! I pretty much follow Katie's recipe exactly. Here's how to make it:

Oatmeal Milk (makes 3-4 cups)

Ingredients

  • ½ cup oats

  • 2 cups water

  • 1 cup additional water

  • ¼ tsp or so salt

Instructions

  1. Mix the oats, salt, and 2 cups water in a large bowl.

  2. Microwave for 4 minutes, watching and stopping as needed so that it doesn't boil over.

  3. Refrigerate, uncovered, overnight.

  4. The next day, blend with the additional water, adding more if a thinner milk is desired.

  5. Drink up!
